Foundation "Het Lamminga Fonds"
History
The fund was established on September 20, 1920, by Prof. Ir. Anske Gerben Lamminga, who worked as a civil and hydraulic engineer in the former Dutch East Indies and later as a professor of Irrigation and Drainage at the Technical University of Delft. The initial purpose of the fund was limited to promoting hydraulic research in the Dutch East Indies. Over time, the Board of the Foundation, consisting of professors from the Technical University of Delft and IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, and/or appointed staff members, expanded this objective to encompass research and education in the entire field of Civil Engineering related to water (including hydrology, water supply, and wastewater treatment) that is significant for developing countries.
Purpose and approach
The Foundation provides financial support for research projects within the field of Civil Engineering related to water that are of significance to developing countries or low-income countries. Applications must be made by an assistant, associate or full professor or section head from the Water Management and Hydraulic Engineering departments of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences (TUD) or from IHE Delft. To apply, an application form must be completed, including a brief project description and a specified amount for which financial support is being requested (see below). Applications that do not meet the criteria outlined below will be rejected immediately. The Board strives to communicate its decision to the applicant within one month.
Criteria for allocation
To assess whether submitting an application is worthwhile, here is an explanation of the various aspects that play a role in the decision, along with some examples:
- Country: The project must be beneficial to a country that is classified by the World Bank as a low- or middle-income country and the involved activities are not sanctioned by the Dutch Government / European Union.
- In case of visiting a foreign country: the region of destination is not classified as a no go area according to TU Delft or IHE rules.
- Project: The project itself must have a clear research or educational character and be beneficial to low- or middle income countries and/or their residents. Projects that use standard design methods and/or lack a development aspect are not eligible.
- Eligible Costs:
- Travel and accommodation costs for project visits.
- Travel costs and fees for presenting research results at a conference or congress.
- Research costs for laboratory and field research.
- Living expenses for PhD-thesis completion. (Note that the Lamminga Fund does not pay 'salaries'. Refund for living expenses will be transferred to the bank account of the beneficiary, not a university department account)
- Costs for organizing a workshop/seminar.
- Supervision: Adequate supervision must be ensured. This means that for MSc/PhD students, the chairman of the thesis committee, the chairperson of the thesis committee, the respective promoter, or the daily supervisor must be known.
Important note for multi-disciplinary groups
In juli 2025, the Lammingafonds has already run out of its yearly budget. Therefore, the Lammingafods unfortunately does not financially support MDP groups any more during the calendar year 2025.
Continuity
To prevent the Lamminga Fund from being depleted in the long term, maximal € 100 000 can be allocated annually for financial support of MSc and PhD students (as of 2025). The Board of the Lamminga Fund aims to distribute this amount equally among the three departments: IHE, Water Management of TUD, and Hydraulic Engineering of TUD, with a minimum of 25% reserved for MSc students. The total amount available for allocation will be determined annually by the Board of the Lamminga Fund and may be adjusted if possible or necessary.
Subsidy amounts
- Subsidy amounts are limited to a maximum of € 5250 per year per researcher or group and per applicant. For a doctoral candidate, the maximum is € 10 500 for the project's duration.
- Contributions to fieldwork, in addition to travel expenses, have a maximum of € 1050 each time.
In exceptional cases where the application does not fit within the aforementioned criteria but is still considered relevant to the Lamminga Fund, the Board may deviate from the rules for allocation.
Requests for subsidy
Requests shall be formulated by an assistant, associate or full professor, or section head of IHE, the department of Water Management of TUD or the department of Hydraulic Engineering of TUD, using this request form and be sent to the secretary of the Lamminga Fund, per E-mail: Lammingafonds@tudelft.nl. For bachelor theses , free minor projects and multidisciplinary projects, the requests must be submitted at least 2 months prior to the start of the activity, including a budget estimate.
